A census name index is an index of names compiled from the census records. This enables you to search for a person by surname, forename and age.

Indexing census names for large counties like Yorkshire or Yorkshire is a mammoth task and a huge amount of manpower is required to compile those records.

Two major UK-based genealogy supplies companies, S&N Genealogy Supplies and British Data Archive, have been funding a new census name-indexing project and making their existing databases available online at www.TheGenealogist.co.uk and www.RootsUK.com.

Thousands of volunteers from all over the UK have since contributed to this project. The online database is quickly expanding with thousands of new records being regularly added to it.

Cultural, historical and geographical knowledge of the UK and an interest in genealogy gives them an advantage in producing more accurate results.

The results are used in published indexes and checking of full transcription projects completed overseas.

The census and official records of birth, marriage and death do not go back as far as parish records. Parish Records started in 1538 when Thomas Cromwell, the Vicar General to King Henry VIII, declared that all marriages, christenings and burials should be recorded. For years before the census began, Yorkshire Parish Records are a very useful resource. A wide range of Yorkshire Parish Records is available on CD and some are now online.

Other useful resources are Yorkshire Directories, which are also available on CD.

In addition to this, S&N Genealogy Supplies has a great wealth of genealogical data and books on CD, as well as software and storage, thus making the company an invaluable resource to family historians.
